About North County Reef (Center)
North County Reef (Center) is an artificial reef in Federal Gulf Waters off St. Petersburg, Florida, where placed structure concentrates bottom fish and pelagics on otherwise open seafloor. Gag Grouper and Red Grouper peak here from October through December, Red Snapper from May through July, and Gray Snapper from May through August. Bottom fishing is the dominant approach for grouper and snapper. Live pinfish and frozen sardines take both grouper species and Red Snapper, while live shrimp and live pilchards draw Gray Snapper tight to the structure. Greater Amberjack peak in March and April and respond to live blue runners or live grunts fished over the reef, as well as vertical jigging with butterfly jigs. King Mackerel move through in two windows, March through May and August through October, when slow trolling live threadfin herring or live blue runners around the reef produces strikes.
