About St. Petersburg Bay Reef

St. Petersburg Bay Reef is an artificial reef in the Tampa Bay waters off St. Petersburg, Florida, where placed structure draws baitfish and the predators that follow them. Sheepshead lead the calendar from January through March, Spotted Seatrout peak in March–April and again in October–November, and Spanish Mackerel run strongest from March through May and again in September–October. Common Snook peak from April through June, Gray Snapper hold on the structure from May through August, and Red Drum reach their peak in August and September. Bottom fishing tight to the reef with live shrimp or live fiddler crabs targets Sheepshead, while Gray Snapper respond to live pilchards or cut bait on knocker rigs, with a chumming program of frozen chum blocks and cut sardines pulling them up off the structure. Above the reef, casting small spoons and metal jigs connects with Spanish Mackerel, and live scaled sardines and live pinfish drifted near the edges draw Common Snook.
