About Tarpon Springs Reef
Tarpon Springs Reef is an artificial reef in the Gulf state waters of the Tampa Bay region, fished out of St. Petersburg, Florida. Spanish mackerel and king mackerel move across the structure in spring and fall, with Spanish peaking March through May and again in September and October, and kings running March through May and August through October. Cobia show during the same shoulder seasons, peaking March and April and again in September and October. Sheepshead hold tight to the reef from January through March, gray snapper take over from May through August, and gag grouper peak from October through December. Bottom fishing with live fiddler crabs and live shrimp works the structure for sheepshead and snapper, while slow trolling live threadfin herring or live scaled sardines along the reef edges targets passing king mackerel.
