About Veterans Reef

Veterans Reef is an artificial reef in federal Gulf waters west of St. Petersburg, Florida, where placed structure holds both bottom fish and pelagic predators. King Mackerel run the area in two windows, March through May and August through October. Slow trolling live threadfin herring, scaled sardines, or blue runners over the reef draws strikes. Red Snapper peak from May through July, Gray Snapper from May through August, and Greater Amberjack in March and April. Bottom fishing with cut bait or live pinfish targets the snapper, while live blue runners dropped to the structure draw amberjack. Red Grouper and Gag Grouper take over from October through December, when bottom fishing with live pinfish, frozen sardines, or squid tight to the reef produces the most consistent action.
