About Picnic Island Park
Picnic Island Park is a public fishing pier on the southern end of the Interbay Peninsula in Tampa, opening onto the waters of Tampa Bay. Spanish mackerel run past the pier in spring and fall, peaking March through May and again in September and October, and anglers work them by casting silver spoons, small jigs, and gotcha plugs. Spotted seatrout peak in March–April and October–November, while common snook move through from April to June and respond to live pilchards, live pinfish, and live shrimp. Red drum peak from August through October, and gray snapper hold around the pier from May through August, where bottom fishing with live shrimp or cut bait produces steady action. In winter, sheepshead take over from January through March, and anglers target them by bottom fishing with fiddler crabs, live shrimp, and sand fleas.
