Whalehead Island sits off Brookings, Oregon, where an outer-exposed rock drop-off falls through depths of 330 to 1310 feet. Chinook and Coho Salmon run through the warmer stretch from May to October, both taken primarily by trolling cut-plug herring, whole herring, trolling spoons, and flashers with hoochies. The rock structure holds Lingcod, best at their January-to-March peak, along with Rockfish from April through September, both worked with metal jigs, leadhead jigs, and swimbaits over the hard bottom. Pacific Halibut move onto the deeper drop from April to August, where drift fishing herring, squid, and salmon bellies covers the descending contours. Pacific Cod, Cabezon, and Leopard Shark also range across this exposed rock ground.
