Whalehead sits off Gold Beach, Oregon, an outer-exposed rock drop-off falling through depths of 60 to 180 feet. The structure holds Chinook Salmon peaking July through September and Coho Salmon running June into October, both taken by trolling cut-plug herring, spoons, and flashers over the deeper water. Pacific Halibut move across the spot from March through August, where drift fishing herring, squid, and salmon bellies works the bottom, while Lingcod concentrate in January and February and respond to jigging metal jigs and swimbaits along the rock. Black Rockfish, Blue Rockfish, and Cabezon hold on the harder structure through the warmer months, with jigging leadhead jigs and swimbaits covering the mid-column and reef edges. The rocky drop-off and exposed position keep fish tied to the contour breaks, making depth control the central concern across each of these fisheries.
