Gibson Spit is a sand flat off Oak Harbor, Washington, in Marine Area 6, holding water from about 5 to 25 feet with mid-range exposure. The flat draws Pacific Halibut through its March-to-June peak and Lingcod earlier in the season during February and March, while Chinook and Coho Salmon move through from June into September. Halibut come to drift jigging with leadhead jigs, metal jigs, or soft plastic swimbaits over the sand, with bait fishing on herring, salmon bellies, octopus, or squid working the same depths. Salmon respond to trolling flashers, spoons, hoochies, and cut plug herring across the flat, and Black Rockfish stay active from February through September on metal jigs, leadhead jigs, and swimbaits. Dungeness Crab fill in the summer months from June to August, taken in crab pots or ring nets baited with fish carcasses, chicken, or clams.
