KIRO (710KHz) marks a drop-off in the inner protected waters off Tacoma, Washington, within DFO subarea 11, where mixed bottom falls through depths of 80 to 300 feet. Chinook Salmon move through from June to September and Coho Salmon peak from July to October, with both taken by trolling cut-plug herring, flashers, spoons, and hoochies across the break. Lingcod hold on the structure from March to June and respond to jigging metal jigs and leadhead jigs with swimbaits, while Pacific Halibut work the deeper edges from March to August on drift jigging with leadhead jigs, herring, and squid. Black Rockfish stay catchable year-round along the drop-off, taking metal jigs, swimbaits, and bait fished close to the bottom. The steep contour and protected exposure concentrate fish along the edge, where jigging and drifting cover the full depth range most effectively.
