About Open Bay Hump

Open Bay Hump is an outer-exposed rock pinnacle in DFO subarea 13-13 off Campbell River, rising through depths of 40 to 120 feet. The structure holds a strong Lingcod population that peaks in May and June and again from August into September, alongside resident Canary, Copper, and Pacific Cod and Copper Rockfish across the rock. Chinook Salmon move through from June to August and Coho hold from May into September, working the exposed water over the hump. Jigging the pinnacle with metal jigs, leadhead jigs and swimbaits, or bucktail jigs takes Lingcod tight to the rock, while bait fishing with whole herring, live greenling, or octopus covers the deeper edges. For salmon, trolling anchovy, herring, spoons, and hootchies works the moving water above the structure, with mooching cut-plug or whole herring as a slower alternative.
