Steep Island sits off Campbell River, British Columbia, where a mixed-bottom drop-off falls from roughly 330 to 1,310 feet in mid-exposure water. Chinook Salmon peak here from June through August and Coho Salmon run from May into September, both taken by trolling anchovy, herring, spoons, or hootchies along the edge, with mooching cut-plug herring a productive alternative for Chinook. Lingcod hold on the structure with peaks in May and June and again from August through September, worked with metal jigs, leadhead jigs and swimbaits, or bucktail jigs over the bottom. Pacific Halibut are present from April through September, reached by drift jigging leadhead jigs, swimbaits, and metal jigs across the deeper flats and slopes. Canary and darkblotched rockfish along with Pacific cod fill out the bottom fishery over the same mixed terrain.
