About Cape Gurney

Cape Gurney is an outer-exposed rock drop-off in DFO subarea 14-9 off Comox, British Columbia, falling from roughly 260 to 660 feet. The structure holds a strong resident groundfish population, with Lingcod through the winter and again from spring into fall, alongside Copper, Quillback, and China Rockfish and Pacific Cod. Anglers work the rock edges and the base of the drop-off with metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs for Lingcod, or fish whole herring, live greenling, and squid on the bottom. Chinook Salmon move through from June to August and Coho from May to September, both taken by trolling anchovy, herring, spoons, hootchies, and flashers along the exposed break. Mooching cut-plug herring and jigging metal for salmon also produce over this deep, current-swept ground.
