About Shields Point

Shields Point is an outer-exposed rocky drop-off in DFO subarea 14-9 off Comox, British Columbia, where the bottom falls away through depths of roughly 260 to 660 feet. Chinook Salmon build through the summer with a peak from June to August, while Coho Salmon hold from May to September, both worked by trolling anchovy, herring, spoons, and hootchies across the edge of the structure. Lingcod are present in two windows, January through March and again May through September, taken by jigging metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs tight to the rock. Black Rockfish concentrate over the same structure from June to August and respond to jigged metal jigs, leadhead jigs, and soft plastic swimbaits, with Copper Rockfish, Quillback Rockfish, and Pacific Cod also holding along the drop. The steep rock face and exposed setting keep bait and predators stacked against the contour, so fishing the deeper edges of the break tends to produce the most consistent results.
