About St. John Point

St. John Point is an outer-exposed rocky drop-off in DFO subarea 14-7 off Comox, British Columbia, where the bottom falls from 260 to 660 feet. Chinook Salmon peak here from June through August, Coho Salmon run strong from May into September, and Lingcod hold along the structure through January to March and again from May to September. Trolling anchovy, herring, spoons, and hootchies covers the salmon along the drop, with mooching cut-plug herring and jigging metal jigs working as supporting tactics for Chinook. Lingcod come from jigging metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs worked close to the rock, or from bait fishing whole herring, live greenling, and squid. The deeper water off the ledge also holds Pacific Cod, Canary Rockfish, Pacific Ocean Perch, Sablefish, and Spiny Dogfish.
