STRUCTURE

Mid

Sansum Point is a rock drop-off in the Cowichan area of British Columbia, with mid-level exposure and depths falling from 260 to 660 feet. The structure holds Chinook Salmon from June through September and Coho Salmon from June into October, alongside a strong resident groundfish population including Lingcod (June–August), Copper Rockfish year-round, and Black Rockfish from May through August, with Pacific Halibut moving through March to July. Salmon anglers work the point with downrigger trolling using anchovy in teaser heads, hootchies, and flashers, while mooching cut-plug herring covers the water column when fish sit deeper. The rocky bottom and steep depth range suit jigging with metal jigs and swimbaits for Lingcod and rockfish, and drift jigging with leadhead jigs and swimbait tails reaches halibut holding along the base of the slope. The drop-off concentrates fish across a wide vertical band, so adjusting depth to the target species is central to fishing it well.
