Clarence Island sits in the inner protected waters off Sayward, British Columbia, where a rocky drop-off falls away through depths ranging from the surface to roughly 275 feet. Chinook Salmon move through from May to August and Coho Salmon follow from June into October, with anglers working the water column by trolling anchovy, herring, spoons, and hootchies, or mooching whole and cut-plug herring along the structure. The rocky bottom holds Lingcod, which peak from February through April and again in late summer, taken by jigging metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs or by dropping whole herring, live greenling, and squid down to the ledges. Pacific Halibut hold on the deeper flats from April through August and respond to drift jigging with leadhead jigs, metal jigs, and soft plastic swimbaits, or to bottom bait fishing with herring, salmon bellies, octopus, and squid. Canary and Widow Rockfish, Sablefish, and Pacific Cod round out the mix over the same rock and drop-off terrain.
