Mary Island sits off Sayward in outer, exposed waters where a rock drop-off falls through depths of 260 to 660 feet, forming steep structure that holds bottomfish and passing salmon alike. Chinook Salmon move through from May to August, with Coho Salmon following from June into October, both worked by trolling spoons, hootchies, and flashers along the edge, while cut-plug herring and metal jigs cover the supporting mooching and jigging approaches. The rock bottom and depth make this a reliable Lingcod spot, strongest from February through April and again in late summer, taken on metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs over the harder structure. Pacific Halibut hold across the deeper flats from April to August, targeted with drift jigging using leadhead jigs and soft plastic swimbaits or bottom bait fishing with herring and squid. Black Rockfish concentrate over the drop-off from June to September, responding to metal jigs and soft plastic swimbaits fished tight to the rock.
