About Reading Rock
Reading Rock is an outer, exposed pinnacle off Eureka, California, where a rock bottom rises through waters running 145 to 150 feet deep. The structure holds Chinook Salmon that peak from May through September and Coho Salmon that run May through November, both worked most effectively by trolling anchovies, herring, spoons, or hoochies, with mooching whole or cut-plug herring as a supporting approach. Lingcod concentrate on the rock from January through April and again in September, taking metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs, or live greenling and rockfish for those fishing bait. Pacific Halibut move through March to August and respond to drift fishing with live baitfish, herring, squid, or shrimp over the deeper edges of the pinnacle. Canary Rockfish, Widow Rockfish, and Pacific Cod round out the mix across the same hard-bottom terrain.
