STRUCTURE
Drop Off
Outer Exposed

Bird Rock is an outer-exposed rocky drop-off off Monterey, California, where the bottom falls through 0 to 55 feet of structured reef and ledge. The rock holds aggregate rockfish and lingcod, with rockfish peaking April through October and lingcod running strongest from November to January and again in spring and early fall. Anglers work the reef with metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs for lingcod, while bait fishing with squid strips, shrimp flies, and live anchovies pulls rockfish off the same structure. The surrounding water supports Chinook Salmon from March through July, taken by trolling anchovies, spoons, hoochies, and flashers along the drop, and California Halibut from March through September, drifted with live anchovies, sardines, or squid. Coho Salmon, Bonito, and Blue Shark move through the outer zone as well, adding variety to the exposed edge.
