About Black Head Rock
Black Head Rock is an outer-exposed rocky drop-off off San Francisco, where the bottom falls away through depths of 260 to 660 feet. Chinook Salmon move through from April to September and hold as the primary pelagic target, worked by trolling whole anchovy, spoons, hoochies and flashers, or by mooching sardine and anchovy on banana weights. The rocky structure supports a strong groundfish population, with Blue Rockfish and Black Rockfish peaking through the warmer months and Lingcod running strongest from February to March, again in August through October, and into December. Rockfish respond to shrimp fly rigs, metal jigs and swimbaits over the drop-off, while Lingcod come to jigged metal and leadhead jigs or live sanddabs and squid worked near the rock. Cabezon hold tight to the bottom here from spring into early winter, taken on squid, shrimp, cut bait and live sanddabs.
