About Elephant Rock
Elephant Rock is an outer-exposed pinnacle off San Francisco, where rock structure rises through depths of 20 to 80 feet in open, current-swept water. The pinnacle holds a strong rockfish population, with Blue Rockfish peaking from April through September, Black Rockfish from May through August, and Lingcod running in multiple windows across February to March, August to October, and December. Blue Rockfish respond to shrimp fly rigs worked over the rock, while jigging with metal jigs and swimbaits takes both Black Rockfish and Lingcod along the structure's edges and pinnacle faces. Cabezon feed close to the bottom here through spring and again in late summer and fall, taking squid, shrimp, and cut bait, and the exposed depth also draws Chinook Salmon from April through September for trolling and California Halibut from April through August on drift fishing. The mix of hard rock bottom and steep relief concentrates fish across the full depth range, rewarding anglers who read the structure and adjust their presentation to the tide.
