About Point Knox Shoal
Point Knox Shoal is an outer-exposed sand flat off San Francisco, running 10 to 35 feet deep near the waters of the central bay. The flat produces California Halibut from April through August and Chinook Salmon from April through September, alongside Leopard Shark, Bat Ray, Pacific Sanddab, English Sole, and squid. Drift fishing across the sand with live anchovies, live shiner perch, or midshipman covers ground and puts bait in front of halibut holding on the bottom. Anglers working the shoal for Chinook lean on trolling with whole anchovy, trolling spoons, hoochies, and flashers, with mooching whole anchovy or sardine as a slower alternative. The exposed setting and shifting depths make working the tide across the flat the practical approach here.
