About J. Brown-Liberty Ship Reef
J. Brown-Liberty Ship Reef is an artificial reef in federal Gulf waters off Destin, Florida, where a sunken Liberty ship hull provides vertical structure on an otherwise open bottom. Red Snapper peak from April through July and Gray Snapper from May through August, while Gag Grouper move onto the wreck from October through December and Red Grouper hold tight to the structure. Bottom fishing with live pinfish, cigar minnows, squid, or cut bait accounts for most snapper and grouper, and vertical jigging with metal jigs or bucktail jigs works the same fish higher in the water column. Greater Amberjack peak in April and May and respond to live hardtail or live pinfish dropped to the wreck, as well as to butterfly jigs and knife jigs. King Mackerel patrol the reef from April through October, and slow trolling live cigar minnows, live menhaden, or live blue runners along the edges of the structure draws them up from the wreck.
