About Okaloosa County Lap Reef
Okaloosa County Lap Reef is an artificial reef in federal Gulf waters off Destin, Florida, where placed structure on the open bottom holds both reef fish and pelagic species. Red Snapper peak from April through July and Greater Amberjack from April through May, while Gray Snapper peak from May through August and Gag Grouper from October through December, with Red Grouper also working the structure. Bottom fishing with cigar minnows, squid, or live pinfish is the dominant approach for Red Snapper on the reef, and live bait bottom fishing with live hardtail (blue runner) or live cigar minnows targets the Amberjack holding over the structure. King Mackerel move through from April through October, and anglers slow troll live cigar minnows or live menhaden around the reef's edges to intercept them. In the fall, Gag Grouper respond to live pinfish and live grunts fished tight to the bottom, with butterfly jigs and bucktail jigs offering a jigging alternative over the same structure.
