About Cape Haze Reef
Cape Haze Reef is an exposed sand flat in the Charlotte Harbor region of Florida's Gulf state waters, lying in 15 to 35 feet of water within reach of Fort Myers anglers. Red drum peak here from August through October, spotted seatrout from March through April, common snook from April through June, and sheepshead from November through March. Live bait fishing with live pilchards, live pinfish, or live shrimp is the dominant approach for both red drum and snook, and jig heads with soft plastics work the sandy bottom when bait is scarce. Seatrout respond to live shrimp, popping cork with shrimp, and paddle tail grubs worked across the flat. Through the cooler months, bottom fishing with fiddler crabs, sand fleas, or live shrimp targets sheepshead holding along the deeper edges of the reef.
