About Causeway Reef
Causeway Reef is an artificial reef in the Gulf state waters off Fort Myers, Florida, within the Charlotte Harbor region. Sheepshead hold on the structure from November through March, and anglers target them by bottom fishing with live shrimp, fiddler crabs, sand fleas, or oysters, or with jigheads tipped with shrimp or fiddler crabs. Gray snapper peak from May through August and respond to bottom fishing with live pilchards, cut bait, or squid, as well as to live shrimp and pinfish fished on the reef. Spanish mackerel move through in March and April and again from September through November, when casting small spoons, jigs, and plugs or chumming with live shiners draws them up around the structure. Gag grouper, king mackerel, and cobia also frequent the reef, giving it a mix of bottom and pelagic species across the year.
