About Davis Key
Davis Key is an exposed sand-bottom drop-off off Fort Myers in the Charlotte Harbor region of Florida's Gulf state waters, where the bottom falls from 15 to 45 feet. Sheepshead hold along the edge from November through March and take live shrimp, fiddler crabs, and sand fleas presented with bottom fishing rigs or on jigheads tipped with shrimp. Gray Snapper take over from May through August, responding to bottom fishing with live pilchards, cut bait, and squid fished tight to the deeper side of the break. Common Snook push through from April to June and Red Drum from August to October, and both come readily to live pilchards, live pinfish, and live shrimp worked along the drop. Spotted Seatrout peak in March and April and take live shrimp and pilchards, while Spanish Mackerel round out the species mix over the open sand.
