About ECA Reef

ECA Reef is an artificial reef in the federal Gulf waters off Florida, west of Fort Myers. The reef structure holds bottom species such as Gag Grouper, Red Grouper, and Red Snapper, while King Mackerel and Greater Amberjack work the water column above it. Gray Snapper peak from May through August, when they stack tight to the reef material and feed on baits presented near the bottom. Bottom fishing with live shrimp, live pilchards, cut bait, or squid is the dominant approach for Gray Snapper here, and live pinfish or pilchards on a live bait rig also draw strikes. Jigging with bucktail jigs or soft plastics on jig heads works the edges of the structure when the snapper suspend off the bottom.
