About Harney Point
Harney Point is a sand-bottom drop-off near Fort Myers, Florida, within the Charlotte Harbor Region of Florida's Gulf state waters, where the bottom falls from 15 to 45 feet. Sheepshead lead the cool-season bite from November through March, followed by spotted seatrout in March and April, common snook from April through June, gray snapper from May through August, and red drum from August through October, with Spanish mackerel also working the area. Bottom fishing along the edge of the drop-off with live shrimp, fiddler crabs, or sand fleas targets sheepshead, while gray snapper respond to live shrimp, live pilchards, or cut bait fished near the bottom in the deeper water. Snook and red drum come to live bait fishing with live pilchards, live pinfish, or live shrimp worked along the slope. Jigging with bucktail jigs or jig heads with soft plastics covers the full 15-to-45-foot range when fish hold at different depths along the break.
