About Helens Reef
Helens Reef is an artificial reef in the Gulf of Mexico off Fort Myers, Florida, within the Charlotte Harbor Region of Florida's Gulf state waters. Spanish Mackerel move through the area in two waves, peaking in March and April and again from September through November, and anglers target them by casting small spoons, jigs, plugs, and soft plastics or by trolling small trolling spoons and diving plugs. Sheepshead hold tight to the reef structure from November through March and respond to bottom fishing with live shrimp, fiddler crabs, sand fleas, and oysters presented close to the structure. Gray Snapper take over in summer, peaking from May through August, when bottom fishing with live shrimp, live pilchards, cut bait, or squid draws them up from the reef. Gag Grouper, King Mackerel, and Cobia also frequent the structure, rounding out a mixed reef fishery across the seasons.
