About Little Shell Island
Little Shell Island is an outer, exposed drop-off off Fort Myers in the Charlotte Harbor region of Florida's Gulf state waters, where a sand bottom falls away across a depth range of 260 to 660 feet. Sheepshead lead the cool-season fishing from November through March, and gray snapper take over from May through August. Spotted seatrout peak in March and April, common snook run strongest from April through June, and red drum hit their stride from August through October, with Spanish mackerel also working the area. Bottom fishing along the drop-off with live shrimp, fiddler crabs, or sand fleas targets sheepshead, while live pilchards, cut bait, and squid fished on the bottom draw gray snapper. Live bait fishing with live pilchards, pinfish, or shrimp is the dominant approach for both snook and red drum along the edge of the sand.
