About Merwin Key
Merwin Key is an outer, exposed sand drop-off in the Charlotte Harbor region off Fort Myers, Florida, where the bottom falls from 15 to 45 feet. Sheepshead anchor the cool season from November through March, Spotted Seatrout peak in March and April, and Common Snook take over from April through June. Gray Snapper peak from May through August, Red Drum run strongest from August through October, and Spanish Mackerel also work the area. Bottom fishing along the edge of the drop with live shrimp, fiddler crabs, or sand fleas targets Sheepshead, while live shrimp, live pilchards, cut bait, or squid fished the same way produce Gray Snapper. Live bait fishing with live pilchards, live pinfish, or live shrimp draws Red Drum and Common Snook as they move along the sand slope between the shallow and deep sides of the break.
