About Miguel Key
Miguel Key is an exposed sand-bottom drop-off off Fort Myers in the Charlotte Harbor Region of Florida's Gulf state waters, with depths running from 15 to 45 feet. Sheepshead lead the cool season from November through March, Spotted Seatrout peak in March and April, Common Snook in April through June, Gray Snapper from May through August, and Red Drum from August through October, while Spanish Mackerel also work the area. Bottom fishing with live shrimp, fiddler crabs, or sand fleas along the edge of the drop-off is the dominant approach for sheepshead, and gray snapper take live pilchards, cut bait, or squid fished on the bottom. Snook and red drum respond to live bait fishing with live pilchards, live pinfish, or live shrimp. Jig heads with soft plastics work the slope from the shallower sand down into deeper water.
