About San Carlos Island
San Carlos Island marks an outer, exposed drop-off off Fort Myers in the Charlotte Harbor Region of Florida's Gulf state waters, where a sand bottom falls away across depths of 260 to 660 feet. Sheepshead peak from November through March, Spotted Seatrout from March into April, Common Snook from April through June, Gray Snapper from May through August, and Red Drum from August into October, with Spanish Mackerel also among the targets. Bottom fishing is the dominant approach for Sheepshead and Gray Snapper along the edge, with live shrimp, fiddler crabs, and sand fleas for Sheepshead and live pilchards, cut bait, or squid for snapper. Red Drum and Common Snook respond to live bait fishing with live pilchards, live pinfish, and live shrimp. Jigging with bucktail jigs or jig heads with soft plastics covers the sloping sand for snapper, snook, and drum.
