About Sanibel Reef

Sanibel Reef is an artificial reef in the Florida Gulf state waters of the Charlotte Harbor region off Fort Myers. Sheepshead peak here from November through March and gray snapper from May through August, with both species working the reef structure. Spanish mackerel arrive in two windows, March through April and September through November, and gag grouper, king mackerel, and cobia round out the target list. Bottom fishing with live shrimp, fiddler crabs, or sand fleas targets sheepshead along the structure, while live pilchards and cut bait draw gray snapper off the same bottom. For Spanish mackerel, casting small spoons and jigs or trolling diving plugs covers the water above the reef, and chumming with live shiners pulls fish into range.
