About Vester Reef
Vester Reef is an artificial reef in federal Gulf waters off Fort Myers, Florida. The structure holds Gag Grouper, Red Grouper, and Red Snapper along the bottom, while King Mackerel and Greater Amberjack patrol the water column above it. Gray Snapper peak from May through August, when they stack tight to the reef. Bottom fishing is the dominant approach for these snapper, with live shrimp, live pilchards, cut bait, or squid dropped directly onto the structure. Anglers also work live bait such as pinfish or jig the reef with jig heads, soft plastics, and bucktail jigs to draw Gray Snapper off the bottom.
