About Channel Key Banks

Channel Key Banks is an open, outer-exposed sand flat near Islamorada in the Florida Keys, with water running 5 to 10 feet deep. Bonefish peak here from March through May and again in September and October, while permit share the spring window from March to May and tarpon hold from March through June. Great barracuda take over in the cooler months, peaking December through February, and red drum round out the species list. The clean sand bottom suits sight fishing with spinning tackle for bonefish using live shrimp, bucktail jigs, or soft plastic shrimp, and sight casting to permit with live crabs or crab flies. Tarpon respond to live bait fishing with live mullet or live pinfish, and barracuda cruising the flat strike tube lures and topwater plugs.
