About Eagle Reef

Eagle Reef is an artificial reef in federal Atlantic waters off Islamorada, Florida, where placed structure on the Keys seafloor holds both bottom species and passing pelagics. Dorado peak from March through July, when trolling rigged ballyhoo, skirted ballyhoo, or trolling lures around the reef's edges is the dominant approach, and live bait drifting with live pilchards or live goggle eyes adds a second option. Mutton Snapper peak from March through June and respond to bottom fishing with live ballyhoo, cut ballyhoo, live pilchards, or squid dropped tight to the structure, with bucktail jigs and knocker-rigged jigs working as a jigging alternative. Black Grouper take over from November through February, and anglers target them by bottom fishing live pinfish, live grunts, or cut bait, or by slow trolling deep-diving plugs and live ballyhoo across the reef. King Mackerel, Wahoo, and Greater Amberjack also patrol the structure, rounding out a year-round mix of reef and open-water species.
