About East Turtle Shoal

East Turtle Shoal is a sand-bottom flat near Islamorada, Florida, with mid exposure and water running 5 to 10 feet deep. Permit peak from March through May, while bonefish show strongest in March through May and again in September and October. Mutton snapper push onto the shoal from March through June, great barracuda peak from December through February, and cobia round out the species list. The shallow sand bottom suits sight casting for permit with live crabs, crab flies, or bucktail jigs, and bonefish fall to sight fishing with spinning tackle using live shrimp or soft plastic shrimp. In winter, anglers sight cast tube lures, topwater plugs, and jerkbaits to barracuda cruising the flat, and they switch to bottom fishing with live ballyhoo, cut ballyhoo, or squid when mutton snapper move in.
