About Hammer Point
Hammer Point is an exposed rock drop-off on the outer edge of the reef tract off Islamorada, where the bottom falls from 15 to 60 feet. Yellowtail Snapper peak here from May through July, Mutton Snapper from March through June, and Black Grouper and Great Barracuda take over in winter, with grouper peaking November through February and barracuda December through February. Gray Snapper, Hogfish, and King Mackerel also work the ledge. Anglers target yellowtail by chumming and flatline fishing with cut ballyhoo, silversides, or live pilchards. Muttons and grouper respond to bottom fishing with live pinfish, live grunts, or live ballyhoo set along the rocky break.
