About Hen and Chickens Hump
Hen and Chickens Hump is a rocky pinnacle rising from exposed outer waters off Islamorada, with its crown and flanks running 25 to 45 feet deep. Black Grouper hold tight to the rock and peak from November through February, when bottom fishing with live pinfish, live grunts, or cut bait draws them out of the structure. Mutton Snapper take over from March through June, responding to bottom fishing with live ballyhoo, cut ballyhoo, live pilchards, and squid, while bucktail jigs and knocker-rigged jigs work the edges of the hump. Dorado push past the spot from March through July, and trolling rigged ballyhoo or skirted ballyhoo along the outer side covers the water where they travel. Greater Amberjack, King Mackerel, and Wahoo also patrol the pinnacle, rounding out a mix of bottom and pelagic species over a compact piece of rock.
