About Indian Key
Indian Key is an exposed rocky drop-off off Islamorada, where hard bottom falls away from 10 to 40 feet along the outer edge of the Florida Keys. Yellowtail Snapper peak from May through July and Mutton Snapper from March through June, with Gray Snapper, Hogfish, and King Mackerel rounding out the warm-season mix. Anglers target yellowtail by chumming and flatline fishing with cut ballyhoo, silversides, or live pilchards. Muttons respond to bottom fishing with live ballyhoo or squid worked tight to the rock. In winter, Black Grouper peak from November through February and Great Barracuda from December through February, and grouper fishermen drop live pinfish or live grunts along the ledge while barracuda draw sight casts with tube lures and topwater plugs.
