About Indian Key Fill
Indian Key Fill is a drop-off along the Overseas Highway fill near Islamorada, where mixed bottom falls from 10 to 25 feet in the Florida Keys State Waters Southwest Region. Yellowtail Snapper peak from May through July, and anglers target them by chumming and flatline fishing with silversides, glass minnows, or live pilchards drifted back along the edge. Mutton Snapper run strongest from March through June and respond to bottom fishing with live ballyhoo, cut ballyhoo, or squid set close to the transition between the shallow and deeper bottom. In the cooler months, Black Grouper peak from November through February and take live pinfish or live grunts fished tight to structure on the bottom. Great Barracuda peak from December through February, and sight casting with tube lures, topwater plugs, or jerkbaits draws strikes from fish holding over the drop-off, while Gray Snapper, Hogfish, and King Mackerel also round out the catch here.
