About Islamorada Underwater Coral Gardens
Islamorada Underwater Coral Gardens is an exposed rock-bottom flat off Islamorada, Florida, sitting in 5 to 10 feet of water along the outer edge of the Florida Keys State Waters Southwest Region. Permit and bonefish both peak from March through May, and bonefish return for a second run in September and October. Mutton snapper hold over the rock from March through June, while great barracuda take over the flat from December through February, and cobia round out the species list. The shallow, clear water favors sight casting for permit with live crabs, crab flies, or soft plastic crabs, and sight fishing with spinning tackle for bonefish using live shrimp, bucktail jigs, or soft plastic shrimp. Barracuda answer tube lures, topwater plugs, and jerkbaits worked across the open flat, and mutton snapper respond to bottom fishing with live ballyhoo, cut ballyhoo, live pilchards, or squid set along the rock.
