About Long Key Reef
Long Key Reef is an artificial reef in the federal Atlantic waters off the Florida Keys, east of Islamorada. Spring and early summer bring the strongest action, with mutton snapper peaking from March through June and dorado running from March through July, while black grouper take over as the primary bottom target from November through February. King mackerel, wahoo, and greater amberjack also work the structure, adding pelagic and reef-dwelling variety to the species mix. Bottom fishing with live ballyhoo, cut ballyhoo, live pilchards, or squid targets mutton snapper on the reef, and the same approach with live pinfish or live grunts draws black grouper out of the structure. Over the surrounding water, trolling rigged ballyhoo, skirted ballyhoo, or trolling lures covers ground for dorado, and live bait drifting with live pilchards or live goggle eyes keeps baits in front of passing fish.
