About Matecumbe Keys
The Matecumbe Keys spot is an outer, exposed drop-off off Islamorada, where mixed bottom falls away from 15 to 40 feet along the edge of Florida Keys state waters. Yellowtail Snapper peak here from May through July, and anglers target them by chumming and flatline fishing with cut ballyhoo, silversides, live pilchards, or glass minnows drifted back along the ledge. Mutton Snapper peak from March through June and respond to bottom fishing with live ballyhoo, cut ballyhoo, live pilchards, or squid set right on the transition between shallow and deeper bottom. Winter shifts the focus to Black Grouper from November through February, worked with live pinfish, live grunts, or live ballyhoo on the bottom, while Great Barracuda peak from December through February and draw sight casting with tube lures, topwater plugs, and jerkbaits. Gray Snapper, Hogfish, and King Mackerel round out the species mix along this edge.
