About Old Sweat Bank
Old Sweat Bank is an outer, exposed sand flat off Islamorada in the Florida Keys, holding 5 to 10 feet of water over open bottom. Permit and bonefish both peak here from March through May, bonefish return for a second run in September and October, and mutton snapper hold from March into June. The clean sand bottom suits sight casting for permit with live crabs, crab flies, or soft plastic crabs, while bonefish respond to sight fishing with spinning tackle using live shrimp or bucktail jigs. From December through February, great barracuda take over the bank and strike tube lures, topwater plugs, and jerkbaits cast to fish sighted over the sand. Bottom fishing with cut ballyhoo, live pilchards, or squid targets mutton snapper across the same depths, and cobia also patrol the flat.
