About Plantation Key
Plantation Key is a protected sand flat off Islamorada in the Florida Keys, where water depths run 5 to 10 feet over open sand bottom sheltered from the open ocean. Mutton Snapper peak here from March through June, while Yellowtail Snapper reach their peak from May through July, and Gray Snapper and Hogfish round out the bottom species. Bottom fishing with live pilchards, cut ballyhoo, or squid targets mutton snapper, and chumming and flatline fishing with silversides or glass minnows draws yellowtail up from the sand. In the cooler months, Black Grouper peak from November through February and Great Barracuda from December through February, with King Mackerel also in the mix. The shallow, clear water over sand suits sight casting to barracuda with tube lures, topwater plugs, or live pilchards.
