About Point Willie
Point Willie is an exposed rock drop-off off Islamorada in the Florida Keys, where hard bottom falls away through 15 to 45 feet of water on the outer edge. Yellowtail Snapper peak here from May through July, Mutton Snapper from March through June, and Black Grouper and Great Barracuda take over in the cooler months, with grouper peaking November through February and barracuda December through February. Yellowtail respond to chumming and flatline fishing with cut ballyhoo, silversides, live pilchards, or glass minnows drifted back along the ledge. Mutton Snapper and Black Grouper hold tight to the rock, where bottom fishing with live ballyhoo, live pinfish, or live grunts draws strikes from the deeper sections of the drop. Gray Snapper, Hogfish, and King Mackerel round out the mix, while barracuda patrol the shallower edge for anglers sight casting tube lures, topwater plugs, or jerkbaits.
