About Ramshorn Shoal
Ramshorn Shoal is an outer, exposed sand flat off Islamorada in the Florida Keys, with water running 5 to 10 feet deep. Permit and bonefish peak here from March through May, and bonefish return for a second window in September and October. Mutton snapper peak from March through June, great barracuda from December through February, and cobia round out the species list. The open sand bottom suits sight casting for permit with live crabs, crab flies, and bucktail jigs, and sight fishing with spinning tackle for bonefish using live shrimp or soft plastic shrimp. In winter, anglers cast tube lures and topwater plugs to barracuda over the sand, while mutton snapper take live ballyhoo, cut ballyhoo, or squid fished on the bottom.
